 WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID

"I want you to know that you really are the first speaker at school who we have genuinely listened to and been captured by what they have to say. You made us laugh, made us want to cry and demonstrated courage, motivation, independence and bravery that was inspirational. You are a brilliant public speaker." Pupil, Manchester High School for Girls

"What an amazing lecture from an amazing woman... the boys really rated you and wondered at the helpful information you were kind enough to give them due to your own experience." Teacher, Haberdashers' Aske's School for Boys

"You were passionate, funny and wonderful to listen to but above all I was simply in awe of your attitude. Truly, you are an inspiration. Talking to people about the reality of living with your illness and correcting any previous inaccurate perceptions of it was invaluable and everyone agreed! I cannot tell you how many girls came out saying 'that was the best talk we've ever had!'  Pupil, South Hampstead High School

"Your talk was amazing. It had a profound affect on all of us. The head of one boarding house said that the boys were still talking about it well into the evening." Teacher, Gordons School

POSITIVE VOICE

 HIV EDUCATION and AWARENESS

Emma Cole

We all have a responsibility to talk openly and educate society about HIV and AIDS – the most devastating virus that humankind has ever faced.

Since being diagnosed HIV positive in 1991, Emma Cole has emerged as an exceptional example of turning something unthinkably tragic around and using it to the good of others. Having come to terms (as far as anyone ever can) with her own mortality, and living each day to the full, she has undertaken public speaking events for over fifteen years – addressing a wide cross section – in schools, within the health service, for youth groups, church groups and colleges.

As Emma herself says, “I am incredibly frank”, and in so being, she is incredibly honest and incredibly effective. She has up-to-date figures and information, as well as her own story – a stark reminder that none of us is immune.

Prevention is currently our only option; there is no vaccine or cure. Education is a fundamental way by which we can slow the rate at which this epidemic continues to spread. When we know the facts, when we base our actions and reactions on the truth, we are less likely to “live to regret it” or cause other needless pain. In sharing some of her own past with your students, Emma will explain why we all need to acknowledge that HIV exists and how to keep ourselves safe from it. She will address both the virus and our attitude towards it, and give your students a valuable opportunity to consider their own actions and the repercussions of these on others as well as themselves.

International research has shown that positive speakers decrease fear and prejudice about HIV, reinforce messages about protective behaviour, change perceptions and break down stereotypes. By embracing facts, figures and feelings, Emma will educate, inform and open the minds of her audience.
