Living Safely

“Personal Safety in Your Daily Life”

Amanda Wilson

We all want to live free and active lives; to feel safe and secure wherever we are; at home and out and about. However, we cannot deny that we seem to be living in a more aggressive society and many of us fear becoming the victim of a personal assault.

To go out to the shops or meet up with friends could put an individual or group of people in an unsafe situation. This could happen because of a variety of reasons, for example, travelling to a location that is not a familiar one.

Everyday in the news, stories are reported on concerning people being beaten, mugged, raped or in the worse case, murdered. In fact, despite the lurid headlines, the average person’s chances of physical attack from a stranger are very low. Indeed, most assaults are on men by men.

There is only one way that the individual can protect themselves from becoming a victim of such incidents – by learning how to protect yourself. Taking care of your personal safety does not mean that you have to shut yourself away in a fortress.

Self defence is one of the many forms used to protect oneself from one of the many types of violence. This may involve any incident of personal, physical, sexual or emotional abuse and will often include threatening behaviour, intimidation or criminal damage to property.

Self-defence is a way of life; confidence building, stress relieving and learning how to calm and diffuse a potentially difficult situation down.
